Dear Parent / carer
Welcome to the first newsletter of 2009. We have had a good start to the year with an awards evening where we celebrated the excellent progress and attitude our students demonstrate across all the subjects, around the school and in the local community. Please see the list of award winners attached. Once again we were all very impressed with the standard of singing from the students who entertained us during the evening.
Y11 are working hard, and look to achieve our best results ever this summer. There is still much to do and a range of support is in place to ensure that they can all achieve their targets and move on to their chosen place of study next year.
We have had some trouble with boilers (why is it always at this time of year?) and have therefore allowed students to keep their coats on in the building at times, but we have managed to stay open. All is sorted now and we will be returning to the standard school uniform rule which is that coats are off in the school buildings. I would ask that when buying a coat for your child, you purchase one that is worn over the blazer and not in place of the blazer. Please could you also check your child’s shoes or trainers; they should be plain black with no logos, coloured soles or coloured laces, thank you.
We have also attached the key dates for this term to this newsletter.
We often hear stories or read about young people in a negative light and I would like to share with you the following thanks I received from a local resident who was helped by our students. This lady’s electric mobility scooter broke down near to the school and she lives near the swimming pool. Tom Wilson, Akeem Smith, Tommy Wood and Michael Njoku came to her aid and pushed her all the way home. When the lady offered them money as thanks they declined. This is true community spirit. Both the lady concerned and her minister wanted to pass on their thanks and praise for the boys.
Following our very popular Christmas production of ‘A Christmas Carol’ which was also performed to elderly neighbours along with an afternoon tea prepared and served by our BTEC Hospitality students, we also continued the tradition of delivering parcels to elderly residents in the area paid for by the money our students raised in the summer sponsored walk. We received a lot of cards and letters of thanks including the following:
“Just a note to say thank you for the Xmas parcel you sent. Please also thank the teachers, pupils and all staff and I wish everybody a HAPPY NEW YEAR.”
Mrs V Tucker
“Thank you to all the staff and students for a very nice afternoon.”
Betty Wright

Eastbrook once again thanks the Jack Petchy Foundation for the Achievement Award Scheme which has been running for some years. Many different departments benefited from the £200 won each month by students who have displayed outstanding qualities in voluntary work, helping others or overcoming difficulties in their own lives. The winners for this term are: Rosie Morgan, Chantel Lewis, Daisy Dodd and Alex Rowley, congratulations to them all.
