Modern Foreign Languages – French
”French is my favourite subject because it’s good fun and it also helps me to understand how languages, including my own, work.” Ben Cox Year 11
“A Eastbrook, je préfère le Français parce que c’est utile pour le futur et le professeur est sympa”
Mark Aderinto Year 10
Key Stage 3 - YEAR 7, 8 and 9
French is taught for 3 lessons a week in Year 7 and 8 and 2 lessons a week in Year 9.
Pupils start learning basic conversational skills and are able to talk about themselves, their family and their environment. They develop some descriptive writing skills and are exposed to authentic written and spoken French.
Most French teachers at Eastbrook are native speakers or have lived and studied in France to be able to deliver the curriculum with authentic expertise.
Pupils will decide whether they will opt for studying French at GCSE level at the end of Year 9.
Key Stage 4 - YEAR 10 and 11
Pupils can decide to study French as an option in Key Stage 4, which is highly recommended for those whose ambition is to work in the leisure and travel industry, education or finance. They are taught 3 lessons a week and are assessed throughout the 2 years. Assessment dates are flexible and are adapted to the students’ needs and abilities. Pupils learn how to improve their conversational French in authentic situations. The range of topics studied is wide and varied and motivating for all students.
Key Stage 5 - YEAR 12 and 13
The more successful GCSE students will decide to opt for studying French at AS and A2 level. They are taught 6 lessons a week and will take their language skills to the next level. They will learn about all the grammatical subtleties of the French language and develop their essay writing skills. They will cover topics such as: media, cinema, fashion, relationships, environmental issues, immigration, multiculturalism and a detailed analysis of a modern French movie.
