Food Technology is a popular subject throughout the key stages, and the progress and achievement of students is good and still improving.
Key Stage 3
Students start to study KS3 Food Technology in year 8. They learn about hygiene and safety in the food room before learning basic practical skills using the cooker. Theory lessons follow the Licence to Cook programme are interlinked with practical cooking sessions. This builds upon the fundamental skills needed to become confident within the food practical room, as well understand the basic principles of a healthy diet.
Key Stage 4
At Key Stage 4 we offer a variety of courses with the aim to meet various needs. These include:
GCSE Catering
This is a two-year course in which students can gain one GCSE, and is assessed by two practical Tasks together with two Research Folders. The written examination is taken in the second year of the course.The course enables students to combine their design and making skills with knowledge and understanding to design and make quality products.
Students are provided with the opportunity to work both independently and as parts of teams.
They also develop their research, analytical, organisational and practical skills while working with a variety of ingredients and equipment.
Having completed this course, students have a variety of options in vocational areas and employment, as well as proceeding to further education.
AQA GCSE Child Development
This is a two-year course worth one GCSE, and is assessed through controlled assessment of two units and one written examination. As well as covering the stages of Child Development from birth to five years, the course covers the areas of pregnancy, parenthood and the diet and health of children. The skills and knowledge acquired will be relevant and transferable to other settings, enhancing career opportunities and providing a satisfying course of study for candidates who may or may not want to progress to further study of the subject.
AQA GCSE (Double Award) Health and Social Care
This is a 4-unit vocational- related qualification worth 2 GCSEs. The course encourages students to increase their knowledge and understanding of the health, social care and early years sectors through the investigation and evaluation of a range of services and organisations.
The course lays appropriate foundation for further study in Health and Social Care. Supported by appropriate work placement, it also enables students to progress to a NVQ in Early Years Care and Education Level 2. Assessment is through controlled assessment of two units and two written examinations..
Key Stage 5
At KS5 we offer Btec First Diploma in Health and Social Care. This is a vocational qualification comprising 6 units, which are internally assessed and externally verified by Edexcel. Students experience work placements in two different settings, and this helps them towards deciding on a career path. Students can also go on to a level 3 qualification.
