Food Technology

Key Stage 3 :: Key Stage 4 :: Key Stage 5 :: Contact

Food Technology is a popular subject throughout the key stages, and the progress and achievement of students is good and still improving.

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3, students study Food Technology in year 8, and are following the Licence to Cook programme. In year 8 they learn the fundamental skills needed to become confident within the food practical room, as well understand the basic principles of a healthy diet. This prepares them for further work at KS4.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4 we offer a variety of courses with the aim to meet various needs. These include:

AQA GCSE Food Technology

This is a two-year course in which students can gain one GCSE, and is assessed by the submission of a controlled assessment folder, and sitting a written examination.
The course enables students to combine their design and making skills with knowledge and understanding to design and make quality products.
Students are provided with the opportunity to work both independently and as parts of teams.
They also develop their research, analytical, organisational and practical skills while working with a variety of ingredients and equipment.
Having completed this course, students have a variety of options in vocational areas and employment, as well as proceeding to further education.

AQA GCSE (Double Award) Health and Social Care

This is a 4-unit vocational- related qualification worth 2 GCSEs. The course encourages students to increase their knowledge and understanding of the health, social care and early years sectors through the investigation and evaluation of a range of services and organisations.
The course lays appropriate foundation for further study in Health and Social Care. Supported by appropriate work placement, it also enables students to progress to a NVQ in Early Years Care and Education Level 2.

Assessment is through controlled assessment of two units and written examination of two units.

BTEC First Certificate in Hospitality

The course consists of three units worth the equivalent of 2 GCSEs at grade A-C. Students explore the hospitality industry, gaining insight into the size of the industry and the different types of settings in which it operates.

All units are assessed through portfolio work including evidence of practical activities and are marked according to criteria produced by Edexcel, to achieve a Pass, Merit or Distinction.
This course provides a suitable foundation for progression to further study within this area such as the BTEC Nationals in Hospitality, or on completion students may seek employment in a wide range of settings within the hospitality industry.

Key Stage 5

At KS5 we offer Btec First Diploma in Health and Social Care. This is a vocational qualification comprising 6 units, which are internally assessed and externally verified by Edexcel. Students experience work placements in two different settings, and this helps them towards deciding on a career path. Students can also go on to a level 3 qualification.
