Business Studies

In the Business Studies Department we aim to prepare students for life outside school by offering an understanding of how the world of business works. We hope to prepare students not just for work but also how to interact with business through buying decisions and through improved financial understanding. We offer many courses in Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 including:

The Certificate in Personal Finance

The Certificate in Personal Finance is aimed at improving student’s understanding of financial matters. The qualifications aren’t just for people who want a career in financial services; they are for anyone who wants to make better informed choices when managing their money..

GCSE Businesses and Communication Systems

GCSE Businesses and Communication Systems is focussed on office skills and has extremely high exam results. It comprises a practical and a theory paper taken at the end of the course. In addition, pupils have the opportunity to learn to touch type and some are entered for RSA exams so they acquire additional qualifications. In the summer of 2009 our A- C pass rate was 57%.

BTEC Business

BTEC Business is offered in Year 10 as an option and Year 12 as a part-time course. It is equivalent to 2 GCSE grades C or above. There are three projects completed for this course. How businesses are set up and run, finance and starting your own business enterprise. In the summer of 2009 our A-C pass rate was 86% with 66% of our students getting A. This means that 66% of our students got two grade A’s!

In recent years three groups of year 10 Business Studies Students have visited the University of London, Institute of Education. They took part in conferences on the Globalisation of Trade and the issues of Fair Trade. The group were treated to lectures and took part in trading games and activities with schools from across London.

Other students have been on market research trips to Romford to learn about how shops promote their businesses.

A level Business

A level Business is a popular choice in the sixth form and prepares students for University level work. Both the AS and A2 courses are entirely exam based and teaching is focussed on skills and exam technique. Our A” pass rate for summer 2009 was 84%. Bradley Pullen who left Eastbrook in 2009 is now studying Business Studies at Greenwich University recently told our Head of Business Studies that his studies at Eastbrook have given him a head start over many of the other students on the course.

A level students also have the opportunity to participate in Global Perspectives – a half day activity where students learn about the fundamentals of trading in a global economy.
